Burn by Julianna Baggott (review)

Title:         Burn
Series:       Pure
#:                 3
Author:    Julianna Baggott

Inside the Dome, Patridge has taken his father's place as leader of the Pures. His struggle has led him here, intent upon bringing down the Dome from the inside, with the help of a secret resistance force. But things are not as simple from his new position of power and he finds himself tempted by his father's words: perhaps if the world is to survive it needs the Dome - and Partridge - to rule it...

As Partridge's resolve weakens, Pressia and Bradwell continue piecing together the clues left to them from the time before the Detonations. It is their hope that they will be able to heal the Wretches, and free them from their monstrous fusings and the Dome's oppression once and for all. But everything depends, too, on Partridge. Separated by distance and history, can they still trust their friend and ally? Or is the world doomed to an eternity of war and hardship

Ok so this review is taking it's time to get onto the blog/written, I just keep getting sick (blame work) but I am sort of up and finally ready to write it.

Lets just start off on a high, I loved this book, I love the whole series, it is one of the best series I've read in a long time. Now then you ask why? well lets see if I am as good with my words as Julianna Baggott.

Ok. So I am a bit of a slow reader and I was reading this bit by bit in my lunch breaks a bit before sleeping at night, but this book is too interesting to put down and go back to work or sleep. There are so many twists and things I didn't see coming that I had to stop reading in pieces and just read the rest in one sitting. I am very glad I did so I could just absorb the rest of the book.

Yes this book still had the grizzly bits that make you cringe but they're not as bad as the first book, or maybe it's because you're onto the third book you've gotten used to it just enough to be able to read them all. It is a bit disturbing to think of a human fused with the earth, animals or machines, but what I found scary was the fact that science is advancing very quickly and humans are still human with all their good and bad traits which makes this book all that much more real to me.

What I didn't like? is that the book had to end, I think I could just keep reading about all of these characters, this world, just so that I could stay in the book.

The ending for this series leaves much for the reader to fill in, the author has taught us a lot about this world, how it works and how the people work, and now we get to think up what will happen to them all. Lets just say this story was no fairy tale where everything is just magically made right. But enough is made right.. you know.

My final verdict for this series, is that this book is not one to get into lightly, it is a dark grizzly tale of death and survival that will change your view on people and life. But do go read it now.

2014 Fairy Tales Retold Reading Challenge Update

So It is three month into the year, a whole quarter gone already and I thought I would do an update on my reading challenge of the year.

If you're not sure what this is it's a challenge hosted by Debz Bookshelf where we try to read as many fairy tale retelling as we can.

I decided to be aim for Lady in Waiting, reading 7 - 9 books for the year. Since I had never read any retellings I wanted to start with a low number (just in case I found out I didn't really like them all that much)

So far I have read and reviewed:

A Kiss in time by Alex Finn   My review
Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge  My review

I have read but not reviewed:

Ash by Malinda Lo

I am currently reading:

Towering by Alex Flinn

I have found that I rather enjoy reading fairy tale retellings. They are stories we all know but the author has made them new and fun again, with all new twists and turns.

Still to read and looking forward to

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross
Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth

Do you enjoy retellings as well? it's not to late to join in!

Waiting on Wednesday: Dangerous Creatures

A weekly meme brought to you by Breaking The Spine where we get to show off some of the books we are waiting to be released.

This week I am waiting on Dangerous Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Expected publication: May 20th 2014 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

A new series returns to the world of Beautiful Creatures. Some loves are cursed...others are dangerous.

Ridley Duchannes will be the first to tell you that she's a bad girl. She's Dark. She's a Siren. You can never trust her, or even yourself when she's around. Lucky for her, Wesley "Link" Lincoln can never seem to remember that; quarter Incubus or not, his heart is Mortal when it comes to Ridley. When Link heads to New York City to start a music career, Ridley goes along for the ride-and she has her own reasons. As if leaving small-town Gatlin for the big city, trying to form a band, and surviving life with a partially reformed Siren isn't hard enough already, Link soon learns he has a price on his head that no Caster or Mortal can ever pay.

Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, the #1 New York Times bestselling coauthors of Beautiful Creatures, are back and casting another magical spell. Their signature mixture of mystery, suspense, and romance, along with a dash of fun and danger, will pull fans in and leave them begging for more

 Why am I waiting?
I don't know really, since this is only book one of a series and I won't be reading it until they are all in my hands. I made the mistake of reading their last series as each book came out and then having to wait another year for each book. It was too much agony waiting to see what would happen. I guess I am just excited to see it come out since I did like the Beautiful Creatures so much.

Fuse - Julianna Baggott ~ Review

Title:        Fuse
Series:      Pure
#:                 2
Author:    Julianna Baggott

We want our son returned. This girl is proof that we can save you all. If you ignore our plea, we will kill our hostages one at a time.

To be a Pure is to be perfect, untouched by Detonations that scarred the earth and sheltered inside the paradise that is the Dome. But Partridge escaped to the outside world, where Wretches struggle to survive amid smoke and ash. Now, at the command of Partridge’s father, the Dome is unleashing nightmare after nightmare upon the Wretches in an effort to get him back.

At Partridge’s side is a small band of those united against the Dome: Lyda, the warrior; Bradwell, the revolutionary; El Capitan, the guard; and Pressia, the young woman whose mysterious past ties her to Partridge in way she never could have imagined. Long ago a plan was hatched that could mean the earth’s ultimate doom. Now only Partridge and Pressia can set things right.

To save millions of innocent lives, Partridge must risk his own by returning to the Dome and facing his most terrifying challenge. And Pressia, armed only with a mysterious Black Box, containing a set of cryptic clues, must travel to the very ends of the earth, to a place where no map can guide her. If they succeed, the world will be saved. But should they fail, humankind will pay a terrible price..

Once again we delve into Julianna Baggott's terrifying world of fusings, secrets and survival. A fantastic dystopian read that will have you wanting more.

Again this is a sequel, it is bound to say something about the previous book, if you haven't read Pure then tread lightly.

I really got into the multiple points of view in this book. This is told from four characters, Pressia, Partridge, El Capitan, and Lyda. You get an insight into everyones thoughts and feelings which I love, instead of the one character just guessing what the other people might mean. The only downfall is reading along as Pressia and something interesting happens and then we go to Lyda and you think 'noooo' but then you get into Lyda's part but then you switch to El Capitan and go 'nooo'. It's an excellent tool to keep your audience captivated and keep reading. Although I would have liked to see what Bradwell had to say/think throughout all of this.

You know how this is the most devastatingly disturbing book, well it still has managed to find something cute, his name is Fignan, he is a black box that was found in the previous book. he's just so cute, a bit like a puppy, but with a blinking light instead of a tail. And I want one. please..

This is a very well written book that is easy to get lost in. Yes it's disturbing, but it's because it has so much back ground filled into the story that you can't help but believe it all. And love it all, the world, the characters, everything. My words do not properly say how good this book is, so far it's one of the best books I've read this year.

Am really hoping the third installment delivers the same amount of intrigue, love and all those other feels that I have found in this book.

Still to come

Vampire Academy Book and Movie Review

Title:          Vampire Academy
Series:        Vampire Academy
#:                     1
Author:     Richelle Mead

Movie:

Last night I left the cinema feeling a little (a lot) disappointed. This movie had so much potential and in my eyes it flopped.

Right from the opening scenes it was just all wrong. And from there it didn't get much better.
I must say when I read the book I pictured Dimitri as a hot badass, this guy in the movie was not him. When he walked into the movie making his big declaration I couldn't help but not like him.

Then we meet Miss Kirova, what are they trying to do to her? yes she is meant to be a bit of a bitch to Rose but the movie makes her out as some sort of evil lady with a vendetta against Rose herself.

I am still disappointed that the movie was so out of sync with the book, timing and incorrect scenes. Why oh why couldn't they just do it like the book.

Ok I did however like the way the we learnt the facts about Moroi and Strigoi and Damphir's. And I really liked Rose's character and the actress that was chosen to play her part did a pretty good job.

But that does not counteract the fact that the rest of the film needed a lot of work. I won't be holding my breath for the release of the movie on DVD or a sequel.

Book:

This was the second time I read the book and just like the first time I rather enjoyed it. It has a nice level of intrigue mixed in with a great story.

Every book needs a strong leading role and this book has Rose Hathaway, kickass guardian(or she really wants to be), and best friend of Lissa Dragomir, princess. Even at her lowest she takes each strike in her stride and holds her head high.

Then there is Rose's mentor Demitri Belikov. Hot badass russian brought in by the Academy as a guardian for Lissa ( a real one) and ends up as Rose's trainer then mentor and then as all teenage girls are bound to do, her crush.

The story starts up with Lissa and Rose being found by the academy and brought back, but they're not saying why they left. they're not saying much at all. They have their secrets and so does everyone around them. And Rose is determined to uncover them and learn about herself, being a guardian and the one she wants to guard, Lissa.

The story is nicely paced, (never a dull moment when you're reading about Rose Hathaway) with a nice level of intrigue with pieces of information nicely placed when needed for more intrigue or for the story to continue, (or Rose to kick someones butt). A must read for vampire fans.

result:

Stick to the books
If you read the book then watched the movie as my friend and I did, you may have been going WTF the whole time. and Noo Noo. Just read the book again and all will be fixed.

Waiting on Wednesday: Of Neptune by Anna Banks

A weekly meme brought to you by Breaking The Spine where we get to show off some of the books we are waiting to be released.

This week I am waiting on Of Neptune by Anna Banks
Expected publication: May 13th 2014 by Feiwel & Friends

Emma and Galen s kingdom and their love is threatened by long-lost Syrena in the brilliant conclusion to Anna Banks bestselling trilogy.

Emma, half human and half Syrena, and her Syrena love, Galen, need time together alone. Away from the kingdoms of Poseidon and Triton. Emma s grandfather, the Poseidon king, suggests the two visit a small town called Neptune.

Neptune is home to both Syrena and Half-Breeds alike. But Emma and Galen didn t sign up to be peacemakers between the ocean and the land-dwelling, freshwater Syrena. They didn t bargain for meeting a charming Half-Breed named Reed, who can barely disguise his feelings for Emma. And they especially didn t expect to find themselves in the middle of a power struggle that threatens not only their love but their ocean kingdoms.

In this stunning conclusion to her bestselling Syrena Legacy, Anna Banks thrills fans with more action and romance than ever

Why am I waiting?

It's the last book in the series and I can't wait to read it, I've heard all good things and it sounds like a book that I would really like, not to mention great covers as usual.
